在朝鲜，主体思想之于马列主义，正如在中国，毛泽东思想之于马列主义一般。都是无产阶级宝贵的斗争思想。金日成的主体思想，在《金日成著作选集》中没有专门罗列一章书阐述，而是把这种思想体现在每一次演讲里。主体思想，不是简单的“人是自己命运的主人”一句话就可以概述的。而且，主体思想里面更没有“应当以忠、孝来爱戴领袖，领袖是赐予人民生命的恩人和慈父”这样的话。主体思想的精髓就是要求人们“确立主体”，简言之就是要人们不要盲目地跟从，要有自己的方向。
朝鲜劳动党将主体思想确立为指导思想，而主体思想的基本哲学内涵和内容源于马克思列宁主义基本原理和本国实际革命建设经验。所谓“朝鲜已经抛弃马列主义”一说，完全是不明真相，或是别有用心的谰言。金日成在他的许多次演讲中，多次提到“青年人应当用马列主义思想武装头脑”“在业余时间可以多学习一下马列主义著作”等等。
1967年，金日成综合大学总长黄长烨将金日成有关朝鲜革命的想法综合成思想体系，提出主体思想是朝鲜在从反封建主义时期到共产主义时期应当遵循的指导思想。主体思想继承、捍卫和发展了马克思主义和列宁主义，和马列主义一道成为朝鲜人民建设社会主义的指导思想。
朝鲜在50年代处在冷战的风口浪尖，因此各种不同价值观、不同阶级的思想开始流传，人们在各项工作中都没有找到自己正确地方向，这个认为这种方式好，那个认为那种方式正确，于是就在这种争吵中白白浪费了时间。针对这个问题，金日成在此文就着重谈到了人们应当“确立主体”（本文重点谈及思想工作方面），克服教条主义和形式主义，在思想工作中确立主体。在金日成看来，如果连鼓动宣传工作人员都没有能够树立正确方向，那么广大人民群众就会被各种不符合实际的思想所侵蚀，损害国家的建设事业。
本文节选自《金日成著作选集》中《关于在思想工作中克服教条主义和形式主义，确立主体—1955年12月28日对党的鼓动工作人员的讲话》一文：
不深入钻研各种问题，没有主体，这是思想工作中最重要的缺点。没有主体，这种说法也许不太恰当。可是，事实上是没有很好地确立主体，这是严重的问题。不解决这个问题，就不能指望在思想工作中取得良好的成绩。
为什么思想工作陷入教条主义和形式主义，为什么我们的宣传工作人员不深入钻研问题，而只是走走形式，为什么不能创造性地进行工作，而只把人家的东西抄来背诵呢？
我们党的思想工作的主体是什么？我们正在做什么？我们正在进行朝鲜的革命，而不是别的国家的革命。朝鲜革命，这就是我们党的思想工作的主体。因此，必须使一切思想工作服从朝鲜革命的利益。我们研究苏联共产党的历史、中国革命的历史和马克思列宁主义的普遍原理，其目的是要正确地进行我国的革命。
为了进行朝鲜革命，就要懂得朝鲜的历史，懂得朝鲜的地理，懂得朝鲜人民的风俗。只有这样，才能用合乎我国人民的口味的方法教育他们，才能使他们热爱自己的家乡和祖国。只有用我国人民的斗争历史及其传统来教育人民，才能增强他们的民族自豪感，才能鼓舞广大群众参加革命斗争。
这次朴昌玉等人所犯的错误，也在于他们否认了朝鲜文学运动的历史….宣传部门的工作人员却禁止在报纸上发表介绍朝鲜人民反日斗争的文章…..否认我国人民的斗争历史…..学校里也有忽视讲授朝鲜历史的倾向。在我们的宣传鼓动工作中，只说人家的东西好，对我们自己的东西却视而不见，这种现象是很多的。我们需要积极吸收世界上先进的东西，但是，必须在发展自己优秀的东西同时吸收先进的文化。如果不这样做，我们的人就会对自己的力量失去信心，变成只想效仿别人的没有志气的人
举一个可笑的例子，连印小册子放一张目录，也效仿人家的做法，把它放在最后一页。社会主义建设的好经验，我们当然要学习，可是何必连小册子的目录也要学外国的方式放到最后一页去呢？这不符合朝鲜人的口味。我们的书的目录不是应当放在第一页吗？！
强调确立主体，可能有些同志会产生一种错误的想法，片面地认为没有必要向外国学习了……….学习（国外经验）的目的在于把这些宝贵经验很好地运用到我们朝鲜革命中来，这才是我们学习的目的。战争时期，许嘉谊、金载旭和朴一禹等人对军队内的政治工作的方法进行了一场无聊的争吵。从苏联回来的人主张学苏联的方法，从中国回来的人则主张学中国的方法。他们彼此争吵不休，这个说苏联的方式好，那个说中国的方式好，这种争吵是毫无意义的。绝不是这个意思，我们应当学习社会主义国家的好经验。
……….人吃饭，用右手吃或者用左手吃，用调羹吃或者用筷子吃，这都没什么关系。不管怎么吃，只要吃到嘴里，不都是一样的吗？有什么必要讲究方式呢？当时，党中央就指出：苏联的好经验要学，中国的好经验也要学，都要学来创造出适合我国实际情况的政治工作方法……….在工作中，重要的是领会革命的真理—马克思列宁主义的真理，重要的是根据我国的实际情况运用这一真理。
不学习马克思主义的真理，只照搬人家的形式，这是有百害而无一利的。马列主义不是教条，而是行动的指南，是创造性的学说。因此，马列主义只有根据各国的具体情况创造性地加以运用，才能发挥它的战无不胜的威力。兄弟党的经验也是一样，只有当我们研究兄弟党的经验，掌握它的本质，并且正确地运用于我们的现实的时候，兄弟党的经验才有价值。否则，如果囫囵吞枣地接受过来，把工作搞坏了，那么不仅会损害我们的事业，而且还会玷污兄弟党的宝贵经验。

I’m tired of MMA Beat-Writers saying that Gray ‘dominated’ Kenny in the fight.
